Success Story | Restoring Hope Through Learning in Refugee Schools (March 2026)

Konga Regina, a 48-year-old mother of seven, is a resilient refugee who fled South Sudan in 2016 following the outbreak of conflict. Seeking safety and a fresh start, she settled in Markulu Village, Kerwa Sub-County in Yumbe District, where she has since been rebuilding her life and supporting her family under challenging conditions.
Her turning point came when she joined Grace Community Savings and Credit Group (CSCG) in Mijale, supported by CRESS Africa Foundation. Through the group, she gained access to financial literacy training, a structured savings platform, and a supportive community that strengthened her confidence and discipline in managing finances.
During the 2025 savings cycle, Regina consistently saved and accumulated a total of UGX 550,000. At the end-of-cycle share-out, she received her savings, which she strategically invested in improving her household welfare. She used UGX 275,000 to purchase 10 chairs for her family, an important step toward improving their living conditions and dignity at home. The remaining UGX 275,000 was used to pay school fees for her children, ensuring continuity in their education.
Regina attributes her progress to the knowledge and opportunities gained through the CSCG model and Financial Literacy. The ability to save regularly, plan expenditures, and prioritize family needs has significantly improved her household’s stability.
She expresses deep gratitude to CRESS Africa Foundation for the empowerment and support provided, which has enabled her to take meaningful steps toward self-reliance.
Key Impact Highlights:
Improved household assets through purchase of essential furniture
Increased access to education for her children
Strengthened financial discipline and savings culture
Enhanced resilience and self-reliance at household level
Regina’s story reflects the transformative power of community-based savings groups in restoring dignity, building resilience, and creating pathways toward sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable populations.
